The In-Between

The world is on the precipice of a new age. What are the forces that will bring us together, and what is driving us apart?

“The In-Between project is like a requiem for a passing age. These are the types of candid and big thinking conversations that you hear in the green room at FODI, which we are recreating in a new audio format.”

— Danielle Harvey, Festival Director

THE BRIEF

The world is on the precipice of a new age. What are the forces that will bring us together, and what is driving us apart? Simon Longstaff sits between Waleed Aly and Naomi Klein as they discuss the decline of meta-narratives in society and politics, reconciling coloniser and Indigenous histories and narratives, and unpacking trends of hyper-individualism and conspiracy. Neither are wholly optimistic nor pessimistic about the future that lies ahead.

WHAT WE DID

Audiocraft and the Ethics Centre held a two ideation workshops to understand the Festival of Dangerous Ideas format and the potential for transitioning it to an audio-first experience. Audiocraft devised a format and production plan based on this insight.

Our team provided research and interview briefs for the Ethics Centre hosts and curators, produced remote recordings with international talent, edited and mixed conversations, and composed a theme song for the series.

Accompanying each conversation episode are shorter ‘B-side’ episodes. Told through composition and sound art, and with an AI host, they are the podcast-reimagining of the unexpected art and performance you’d see at a festival. In these episodes, we hear music composed by a post-biological synthesiser, electromagnetic recordings taken through house plants, an AI-generated conversation between two chatbots about the end of humans, and a feature of Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq’s powerful piece, Tongues.

Alongside the longer conversations unpacking lessons from our past and predictions for the future, the series acts as an audio time capsule, or golden record, documenting this crucial moment in time. These episodes were curated, composed and produced by Jess Hamilton and Adam Connelly.
