Lesley Dumbrell ‘Thrum’ Audio Tour
Commissioned by the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW), this creatively produced audio tour successfully weaved together new and existing recordings, bringing the exhibition curator and the artist into seamless dialogue.
“I called it Thrum because the more I looked at her work and thought about it, the more I realised that this is not just art that you see, but it's also art that you feel. And when you think about the word thrum, like the thrum of a guitar string, you get that sense of a vibration going through your body.”
— Anne Ryan, AGNSW
THE BRIEF
AGNSW is always seeking creative ways to engage visitors more deeply with the works and the artists being exhibited on its walls. To this end, when they announced the 2024 Lesley Dumbrell ‘Thrum’ exhibition, they approached Audiocraft to create a series of audio stops with an exciting creative challenge; to find a way to bring the artist into conversation with the exhibition curator, Anne Ryan.
WHAT WE DID
When approaching this production, the key objective was to ensure the curated conversations sounded authentic and captured the spirit and point of view of the celebrated artist. Our producer, Olivia O’Flynn had access to an existing recorded interview with the artist, from which she selected relevant insights that brought depth and understanding to the exhibition on display. She then worked closely with exhibition curator, Anne Ryan, to develop and record scripts that would help provide context for Dumbrell’s ideas, and connect them more directly to the works on display.
The storytelling was then brought to life with curated soundtracks to match the mood and energy of the works being discussed, allowing visitors to ‘feel the thrum’ as described by the curator.
